Vision

PortalJS has 2k+ GitHub stars as an open-source frontend framework for data portals. The next move: convert that asset into an AI-native toolkit — a curated collection of prompts, template scripts, and reusable components designed so that AI agents can build data portals autonomously, and developers can build them dramatically faster with AI assistance.

The bet: the marginal cost of standing up a data portal drops to near zero when the right primitives exist. PortalJS becomes the go-to starting point for anyone building with AI — whether that's a developer prompting Claude Code, or an agent spinning up a portal end-to-end.

June 2026 progress (engineering)

The AI-native toolkit thesis went from vision to shipped primitives:

create-portaljs CLI — npm create portaljs@latest, an adoption-grade scaffold for a full portal.
Agentic skills, installable anywhere — /connect-ckan, /add-chart, /add-map, /deploy, /define-schema; legacy heavy components retired.
/migrate skill — harvest/migrate datasets across CKAN, Socrata, OpenDataSoft, ArcGIS, and DCAT-US, over a canonical Frictionless/DCAT model with a CKAN write target.
New portaljs.com — AI-native landing, redesigned /blog, /cloud, and compare/integration pages on one design system.
Docs build-out — Get Started, Core Concepts, and Skills/Templates/Backends reference.
